The objective of this project is to develop a low-cost, accurate, robust inspection
system using guided ultrasonic wave imaging to detect corrosion, attrition, fouling
build-up and cracks found in food and drinks pipelines, as well as water pipes and
heat exchanger tubes, thus enabling repair work at an early stage.
By extending the lifecycle of materials through early repair, material waste and product
contamination can be eliminated. Existing inspection systems provide limited coverage,
leading to poor detection capability and monotonous inspection.
Hence, this project proposes to develop a new compound transducer array and associated system
to enhance the resolution of present guided wave technology by combining both advanced signal
processing and automated focussing systems. This will increase inspection performance
especially the detection and sizing of small cracks and corrosion.
